What you get back

A rating is only useful if it tells you what to do next, so Danzu returns six numbers rather than one. Each is scored 0–100 and carries its own coaching note:

• Timing — how precisely your accents land against the beat.
• Groove — whether your body keeps riding the rhythm between the accents.
• Sharpness — how crisply your moves snap on the beat instead of blurring past it.
• Amplitude — the size and commitment of your movement, full-out or marked.
• Variety — how much genuinely different material you show, rather than one loop.
• Dynamics — whether your intensity rises and falls with the music or stays flat.

The overall score tells you roughly where you stand. The six axis scores tell you what to practise — and they are usually uneven, which is the point. A take rated 74 overall with timing at 88 and groove at 61 is not a "74 dancer"; it is a dancer with good beat accuracy and a pulse that dies between moves. Those need completely different sessions.

How to film a take worth rating

1. 10–30 seconds, one continuous take. Long enough to show how you move over time, short enough that you commit to it.
2. Full body in frame, including feet. Weight changes and footwork carry more of the score than most dancers expect.
3. Prop the phone up rather than holding it. A moving camera makes movement harder to measure and harder for you to watch back.
4. Real light, real music, real space. A bedroom is fine. A studio is not required and does not improve the rating.
5. Do not film your best-ever run. Rate a typical take. A rating of your peak performance tells you nothing about what to fix.

Why get your dancing rated at all?

Because self-assessment has a predictable blind spot. While you are dancing you hear the music and feel synchronised with it, so timing drift is nearly invisible from the inside. Watching yourself in a mirror does not fix this — the mirror lets you correct in real time, so you never see the uncorrected version. Video removes that comfort, and a rating turns the discomfort into something specific enough to practise.

The other reason is comparability. Danzu's scoring is deterministic — the same video always produces the same rating — so refilming the same song after a month of work gives you a number you can trust rather than a vague sense that things feel better.

What a rating will not do

Worth stating plainly, because inflated claims are common in this category:

• It is not competition judging. Danzu is a training instrument; no adjudicator uses it and no result is official.
• It cannot tell you whether you performed someone else's choreography correctly, because it never saw the original. That is the tradeoff for being able to rate freestyle at all.
• It does not replace a teacher. A teacher sees intent, context, and your body in the room. Danzu measures what a camera can measure.
• A single rating is close to meaningless. The value is in the trend across takes, which is why the first score matters far less than the fifth.
